Our Approach

The Literacy Tree approach

At Colham Manor, we use The Literacy Tree, an engaging and inspirational text-based approach to teaching English. High-quality children’s literature sits at the heart of our curriculum. We carefully select books that reflect our wider curriculum and the interests and experiences of our pupils so that learning is meaningful, relevant and inspiring. Through these texts, pupils develop strong reading, writing and language skills while building a love of literature.

Writing

Writing is taught through 'Writing Roots', which are carefully planned sequences of lessons based on high-quality and significant children’s books. These lessons engage and challenge pupils, supporting them to become thoughtful readers and confident writers. Throughout these sequences, pupils learn and apply grammar, spelling, vocabulary, literary language and composition skills in meaningful ways. Learning builds towards a range of exciting and purposeful writing outcomes, including shorter pieces, longer compositions and extended writing, where pupils write with a clear purpose and audience.

Spelling

Spelling is taught through 'Spelling Seeds', which complements Writing Roots by providing structured and engaging spelling lessons linked to the texts pupils are studying. These sessions include investigations, practice and opportunities to apply spelling knowledge within meaningful contexts, helping pupils develop confidence and accuracy in their writing.

Reading

Whole-class reading is taught using 'Literary Leaves'. Each unit focuses on key reading skills from the National Curriculum, allowing pupils to explore high-quality texts in depth. Through discussion, questioning and analysis, pupils develop important skills such as understanding vocabulary, making inferences, explaining ideas and thinking critically about what they read.
