EYFS Early Reading & Phonics

Early Reading & Read Write Inc Phonics(RWInc.)

Fostering a love for reading early on sets a strong foundation for lifelong learning and personal growth.

Early reading refers to the process of children learning to read and write at a young age, typically before they enter formal schooling. It often involves:

  1. Exposure to Books: Introducing children to a variety of books, both picture books and simple texts, to build familiarity with stories and language.

  2. Phonemic Awareness: Teaching children to recognize and manipulate the sounds in words, which is crucial for decoding text.

  3. Vocabulary Development: Expanding a child's word bank through reading and discussing stories, which helps improve comprehension.

  4. Storytelling: Engaging children in listening to and retelling stories to enhance understanding and narrative skills.

  5. Interactive Reading: Encouraging discussions about the book's content, asking questions, and making connections to their own experiences.

  6. Writing Activities: Introducing simple writing tasks, like labeling pictures or writing letters, to reinforce the relationship between spoken and written language.

Early reading sets the stage for literacy skills that are essential for future academic success and personal expression.

Early Reading & Pre-phonics

Read Write Inc (RWInc.) is a Systematic Synthetic Phonics programme which helps all children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling. The programme is designed for children aged 4-7. However, at Colham Manor we begin the programme in Nursery for children who are ready and continue teaching RWInc. to children beyond the age of 7 if they still need support with their reading.
