Early reading and phonics

At Colham Manor we use Read Write Inc (RWInc) to support our teaching of phonics and early reading. Our aim is for every child to become a reader. Read Write Inc. helps all children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling. The programme is designed for children aged 4-7, however, at Colham Manor we begin the programme in Nursery from the summer term for children who are ready. We continue teaching RWInc. to children beyond the age of 7 if they still need support with their reading.

The teaching of reading, both word reading and comprehension are essential for developing pupils’ competence in both dimensions; different kinds of teaching are used for each. We want your child to love reading and to want to read for themselves. This is why we put our efforts into making sure they develop a love of books as well as simply learning to read.

We offer exciting reading experiences in school to promote the pleasure and knowledge that can be gained from books, for example, the celebration of world book day, author visits, extra-curricular reading clubs and reading advocates who lead parent reading events.
